Back in the days (remix)

Back in the Days documents the emerging Hip Hop scene from 1980-1989—before it became what is today’s multi-million-dollar multinational industry. Back in the days, gangs would battle not with guns, but by breakdancing. Back in the days, the streets—not corporate planning—set the standards for style. Back in the days, Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, photographing everyday people hangin’ in Harlem, kickin’ it in Queens, and cold chillin’ in Brooklyn.

Banksy myths and legends

No single living artist has created as many myths, rumours and legends as Banksy. Many of the tales in this book are from Bristol, some are from further afield. What they share is that they are all told with the wide eyed wonder which Banksy inspires. Collated between 2009 and 2011 some of these stories are quite old and have been told so many times they have become the stuff of legend, others are more questionable and best described as myths. Some are laugh out loud bollocks and others are simply gossip. You be the judge

After the laughter, Herakut 2

Herakut links the rough and the straightforwardness of their sub-cultural home base with the technique and discipline of the world of Fine arts. they are gatecrushers – but never forced or planned. Everything they do grows organically. they go by their own creative flow, neither by intention nor by the market. Herakuts work ranges from murals to collaged interior design, canvas pieces and sketches to animated short-film, from analogue photography to three-dimensional objects and sculptures. In fact, for Hera and Akut there is no boundary to the illustration of their stories. they focus on the message not the medium. they are storytellers, and have created their own family of characters, their own species. Herakuts characters are easily recognizable. With their gestures and expressions they raise questions and try to find answers at the same time. Every one of their stories is a reflection of their reality. Herakuts characters and their own visual vocabulary are sent out into the world to communicate. Preferably in places where people do not expect to meet art. After the Laughter – the 2nd book of Herakut tells the story behind their stories. It is a hand-made scrapbook with 240 fully collaged pages on which the duo shares the good sides and the bad from the second half of their collaboration years, 2009 to 2011. It is just as personal as all their pieces and that makes it a piece of art in itself.
The history of american graffiti

The History of American Graffiti is the definitive story of the worlds biggest art movement. Tracing the evolution of graffiti from its early freight-train days to its big-city boom on the streets of New York City and Philadelphia, and to its modern-day influences, this volume is a compelling look at the key moments, places, and players in an art form distinctly American in flavor yet global in its reach. Featuring behind-the-scenes stories and profiles gleaned from more than four years’ worth of interviews with graffiti’s most prominent names, as well as its lesser-known pioneers, authors Roger Gastman and Caleb Neelon provide an insider’s perspective on the history of the medium. Not only do they reveal the most popular trends and styles that have dominated the scene for the last fifty years but they also provide a thorough examination of the regional differences among major American hubs—New York, Los Angeles, the Bay Area, Chicago—and under-the-radar scenes in cities like Washington, D.C., Boston, and Miami. All told, more than twenty-five American cities are profiled, making this one of the most comprehensive volumes on the subject. With more than one thousand photographs, mostly previous unprinted, from more than two hundred photographers, The History of American Graffiti is fantastic well written in a typcial Gastman manner.

Street fonts

Claudia Walde spent over two years collecting alphabets by 154 artists from 30 countries. Each artist received the same brief: to design all 26 letters of the Latin alphabet within the limits of a single page of the book. The result is a unique typographical sourcebook featuring over 150 specially designed, original alphabets exclusive to this book.

The BOOMBOX project

On the heels of the graffiti renaissance comes a vibrant look at an old-school icon that figured prominently in the hip-hop, rock & roll, and punk movements of the 1970s and 80s. The Boombox Project features contemporary fine art portraits of an array of vintage boomboxes, as well as scores of documentary photographs of the people who brought the boombox movement to life back in the day. The book is more than just a collection of images, though; it’s also an oral history of the early days of hip-hop, featuring memories from Fab 5 Freddy, Bob Gruen, Rosie Perez, Kool Moe Dee, LL Cool J, Lisa Lisa, DJ Spooky, and Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, among others, on the role this once ubiquitous machine played.

Tokyo tattoo 1970 by Martha Cooper

Japanese tattoo was a secret art form in the early 1970s. The masters for the traditional techniques worked in small studios and tattoing was something for a distinguished few. In 1970s, when renowned street art and hip hop photographer Martha Cooper came to Tokyo, she decided to focus on this secret art and began documenting the life and work of traditional Japanese tattooist Horibun I. Tokyo Tattoo 1970 is a book about the traditional art of tattooing and a portrait of a master artist.

Lowrider coloring book

Impalas, Cadillacs and Rivieras. In the Lowrider Coloring Book, you will color the classic and most popular Lowrider models. Lowrider culture reaches back to 1930s Los Angeles, where it became popular for style-conscious Latino-Americans to load their cars with sandbags to bring it closer to the road. Style was everything, and when lowered cars were banned in California in the 1950s, it became necessary to find a way to raise and lower the car simply to avoid fines. The solution was to use hydraulics from old fighter planes left over from World War II. The rapper Kid Frost showcased lowriding in the early 90s hit Lowrider, and since then, the cars are closely associated with hip hop culture. Today, lowriding is bigger than ever with thousands of enthusiasts in most parts of the world. All strive to outdo each other with the most elegant varnish, interior, hydraulics, chrome and rims. The custom cars you’ll be coloring in the Lowrider Coloring book were converted by some of the best and most legendary enthusiasts.
